In order to meet the individual needs of children across Scotland we have developed a range of foster care placements.
These are designed for children and young people demonstrating challenging behaviour. This service provides intensively supported placements which have input from our multidisciplinary teams, including education workers and therapists.
Swiis Foster Care has a separate team in Scotland dedicated to recruiting and supporting permanent foster carers. The team, based in Dunfermline, includes social workers, education workers, therapists and resource workers who are available to provide flexible support to carers and children as required.
Permanent fostering is intended to provide children, who cannot return to their birth families, with a ‘family for life’ where they can settle and achieve their potential. This is the best option for individuals and families who see fostering as a way of offering a life-long commitment to the right child, who will be carefully matched with them. It is a realistic alternative to adoption, providing flexible support and realistic remuneration.
These are designed for children and young people who have less complex needs but require caring well-trained foster carers.
These are designed for children and young people who have difficult backgrounds and therefore can have complex needs. We are offering robust, well supported placements where carers can access support and advice from our specialist education and therapeutic services.
SQA Assessment Centre
In March 2011, Swiis became approved as a SQA Assessment Centre. This meant that our Learning and Development Team could deliver the Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ), Health and Social Care level 3, Children and Young People Award to our foster carers. We feel that this award provides our foster carers with an excellent opportunity to gain a qualification which evidences the knowledge and skills they continue to develop throughout their experiences in their fostering role.
Swiis now has a full time SVQ Assessor who provides those foster carers undertaking their award with individual support, which may be face to face or by phone or email. We also provide ‘drop-ins’ at each of the local teams on a monthly basis. Our foster carers who have started or completed their award consistently state how much more confident they have become and how the experience has benefited them as carers.
